REASSIGNED
Written and submitted by Mikkel Lodahl

Bloody hell! That had been the thought that swept through Piett's head, when he saw the Millenium Falcon jump to hyperspace an hour ago. Now, he had been summoned to Darth Vader's meditation chamber. Well, he guessed that he was only lucky to have this postponed an hour. The admrial stood vigilant as the dark meditation bowl opened and Darth Vader turned towards him.

"Admiral," the sinister voice said, "I have supervised your actions during the last weeks." Now it came. He would kill Piett now, and the next in the chain of command would become admiral. Piett didn't even know who that might be. Maybe, it was just the first captain that Vader saw after… He wouldn't even think about. "I want you to lay in a course for Coruscant. Upon our arrival, the Emperor expects to see you in his private chambers. You are dismissed, admiral." With that, the black meditation bowl closed, and Piett was left in dark, thanking whatever gods that might be listening that he was alive. At least, until I meet the Emperor…

The shuttle had had a safe journey to Imperial Palace, and Piett hadn't been able to help himself, and admired the millions of lights that were in Imperial City. This was the Seat of Power for the Empire, and Piett was proud of it. If it were not to be his place of death, it would be even more pleasing. The two red clothed Royal Guards at his side were silent. They probably already knew what he was going in to. But Piett was not a man who let himself be broken down. He preserved his stature, even when the herald said to him that he was allowed to enter.

The room inside was dark, and probably strewn over with traps. Piett walked to the stairs that led to the throne. The Emperor had his back turned at the moment. The admiral reached the start of the stariway, and kneeled. "My Emperor," he said, calmly. The throne turned towards Piett. "Rise, admiral," the Emperor said. The old, cruel voice startled Piett to a degree, but he managed to stand up, without showing it.

"I have observed your work in the past few weeks, as have Lord Vader, and I have decided that," the old man started. Here it comes! Goodbye life! Nice meeting you! "You are to be reassigned." What? The Emperor's eyes were not visible, but Piett could feel that they probed him. "You are worthy enough to be trusted with one of the most secretive missions in the Empire. You are reassigned to ISD Indetectable, and will head for Corulag immediately upon your arrival. When you arrive there, you will be contacted by one of my agents. You are to ensure the agent passage to Tatooine. Go now, admiral. You will be further briefed when you arrive at Tatooine."

Piett found himself reacting instinctively. He nodded respectfully. "Thank you, my Emperor." The Emperor's chair turned around again. Piett walked for the door. That could have been a lot worse. A nice little ferrying duty would not be so bad. And this might even earn him favor at the Emperor. More than you have now, big boy! When the doors closed behind him, Piett allowed himself to smile.
